"Team Turtle Trek" Conquer Their Fitness Goals on Bald Head Island
Published Wednesday, September 11, 2013

The Bald Head Island Center for Wellness completed another very successful wellness retreat on September 11, 2013 on Bald Head Island to the resounding praise of the participants. All reported that this highly personalized wellness program exceeded their expectations and they felt better equipped to lead a healthier lifestyle.

The Bald Head Island Center for Wellness offers a holistic approach to wellness with a unique combination of nutrition and exercise instruction combined with lifestyle coaching. The five day, full immersion wellness program included personalized workshops with a nutritionist, hypnotherapist, personal trainer and included cooking classes offered by the Center's personal gourmet chef, Tony Crosson. The participants also indulged in the many relaxing services offered by the Island Retreat Spa and Salon.

Some of the topics included in the group discussions were a Mindful Eating exercise, Menu Planning at Home, Moving Away from Diets, and Changing Destructive Thinking. Group exercises were conducted every morning at the BHI Association Center by the Center's certified group fitness trainer, Jennifer Lock. Strength training and customized exercise routines for weight loss were conducted at the Bald Head Island Club and were supervised by the club’s certified personal trainer, Terry McAlister. The group also enjoyed morning workouts overlooking the marsh and benefitted from behavioral focused hypnotherapy sessions conducted by the Island's own Andrea Pitera.

One of the hallmarks of the Bald Head Island Center for Wellness is our focus on personalization. Because attendance at the Wellness Retreat is capped at 10, each participant receives a great deal of individual attention, encouragement and assistance throughout the week. Meal plans and exercise programs are tailored to each participant.

Sea turtles have been hatching on Bald Head Island for over 100 million years. The group was fortunate enough to be able to witness this natural spectacle during one of their evening walks on the beach. The little hatchlings emerge from the sand, scrambling out of their nest, flapping their fins vivaciously, racing to reach the surf to start the next step of their incredible journey. With the life changing image of baby turtles crawling across the beach fresh in everyone's mind, the group decided to adopt the "Team Turtle Trek" moniker to represent their own personal challenges on their journeys to live a healthier lifestyle.

The BHI Conservancy is a non-profit organization founded in 1983 whose mission is to protect, preserve and promote the natural environment of the Smith Island complex.
