The BHI Conservancy is a non-profit organization founded in 1983 whose mission is to protect, preserve and promote the natural environment of the Smith Island complex. With 500 different programs, including summer camps for children, naturalist-led kayak tours, wildlife education about sea turtles, alligators, birds and more, the Conservancy will introduce you to the wilds of Bald Head Island. Open year-round, the BHI Club is situated in full view of the Atlantic Ocean and overlooking our championship 18-hole golf course. With a slope rating of 137 from the men's tees and 113 from the women's, the course wraps around freshwater lagoons, through a maritime forest, and across dunes overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. For nearly 200 years, North Carolina’s oldest standing lighthouse, Old Baldy, has marked the mouth of the historic Cape Fear River. From the marina, boats have unobstructed access to the Cape Fear River, the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean. Small boat rentals are available through the marina dockmaster. Kayak rentals and excursions may be arranged through Riverside Adventure Co., and the marina dockmaster can provide contact information for several island residents who offer canoe and kayaking excursions, creek and river cruises or fishing charters. Bald Head Island is a sailor’s delight, offering near perfect conditions for offshore and protected inshore cruising less than 30 minutes from the picturesque Bald Head Island Marina.
